Milk thistle extract may protect the cells of the liver by blocking the entrance of harmful toxins and helping remove these toxins from the liver cells. As with other bioflavonoids, silymarin is a powerful antioxidant. Milk Thistle also regenerates injured liver cells. The liver functions as a primary filter of toxins in your blood, processing them, where possible, for quick removal from your system. Where these toxins are water soluble, the liver can deal with them in one step. When they are not, it requires two processes, with the need to store the toxins while the necessary enzymes are being mobilized to deal with them.
Unfortunately, many of our modern environmental toxins we are exposed to are non water soluble, including alcohol consumption, insecticides and pesticides as well as simple products we use daily such as cosmetics. Perhaps the source of most modern liver damage comes from prescription drugs, as well as "innocuous" over-the-counter drugs such as Tylenol. The health of the liver is thus not only desirable, it can become life-saving.
The proper functioning of the pancreas is of equal importance, for, inter alia, it regulates the way the body processes sugar in the blood through its ability to secrete insulin. If it is damaged, diabetes is the result, and the multitude of insulin related health problems are spawned with heart attacks, amputations and even death not too far away.
The medical industry has no solution to these problems and cannot pinpoint the causes. Treatment consists of suppressive drugs with no cures in sight. Traditional medicine has long used milk thistle to treat liver disease as well as extreme cases of poisoning from mushroom and other sources, and silibinin has been identified as the most beneficial ingredient of milk thistle, along with silimarin. Both are dispensed in Europe as prescription drugs.
