Several studies have determined that:
- ALC prevents neurologic impairment that normally occurs in oxygen-deprived neonatal rats. The researchers suggested that ALC be given to children who suffer from oxygen deprivation in the womb. (Neuroscience Letter, 223:3, 1997)
- Short-term administration of ALC reversed ammonia-induced brain cell abnormalities and normalized brain cell energy metabolism in mice. (Neuroscience Letters, 224:2, 1997)
- LC prevented ammonia-induced brain cell degeneration in rats. Because LC did not produce significant reductions in plasma ammonia levels, the researchers suggested that LC's protective effect may be to maintain the energy-producing capabilities (mitochondrial respiration) of the central nervous system. The researchers emphasized the value of L-carnitine for people with diseases that elevate the ammonia levels in the blood, such as cirrhosis of the liver.
- Propionyl-L-carnitine improved physical performance, emotional function and global health index scores of people suffering from a severe arterial occlusive disease called intermittent claudication, which severely inhibits a person's ability to walk. (American Journal of Cardiology, Vol. 79, Issue 6, 1997)
- After administering 3,000 mg of LC for 20 days, significantly greater blood flow velocity was measured in the capillaries. Systolic blood pressue was significantly reduced in response to LC. (Drugs Under Experimental and Clinical Research, 23:1, 1997)
- ALC supplementation may protect against formation of cataracts. Diabetic-induced rats had 63 percent to 85 percent reduction in the levels of carnitine in the lenses of their eyes. (Experimental Eye Research, 64:2, 1997)
In addition, several studies have documented the role played by L-carnitine and acetyl-L-carnitine in resisting cellular aging.

ACETYL L-CARNITINE
Acetyl-l-carnitine plays an important role in the transfer and utilization of long-chain fatty acids, which are used in the production of energy. Alcar also enhances memory and cognitive abilities.
The amino acid L-carnitine (LC) and acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC) play a critical role in maintaining youthful cellular energy metabolism and blood flow. Because brain aging is a result of diminished brain cell metabolism and reduced cerebral circulation, the potential role of carnitine in protecting neurologic function is clear.
